McKinley Joy's Journey

4 Weeks Old November 7, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — McKinley Joy's Journey @ 7:49 am

It is hard to believe that Drew will be four weeks old on Tuesday!  As all new mommas know, those first couple of months seem to be in a time warp of sleep deprivation, changing diapers…..I forgot how much they poop, feeding, feeding and trying to take care of everyone else.  Scott has been wonderful in helping and we have figured out a decent balance, although the past week we had another matter to deal with.

As careful as we are, McKinley managed to get some type of viral cough/infection.  Thankfully, we have not had to go to the hospital as she is fighting it off ever so slowly.  She started with a dry cough and had that for a week.  After a week, it progressed to keeping her up coughing at night.  Scott and I have had to juggle her being awake and Drew needing fed and taking care of him twice in the night.  It has sometimes taken McKinley 2 hours or more to settle back down and go back to sleep.  We are looking forward to her getting over this cough and getting into a routine with just one kid being awake in the middle of the night.  It has been challenging, but we’ll get through it and after this we may very well go into germ-a-hiding :)   Yay God….she slept through the night last night-Sunday night!!!

Scott update:  Scott has started working at his company’s brand spankin’ new property in Mason.  http://www.palmeraapts.com/  He has enjoyed the change and is extremely busy at work.  He is also the only employee on call right now, which is ok as long as the phone does not ring, but that isn’t always the case.   He is also scheduled to have a lipoma underneath his left armpit removed on November 16th.  My parent’s will come to take care of the kiddos and it should be an outpatient procedure.  Please simply pray for a uneventful hospital visit and him to recover quickly.  We have had enough medical drama for a lifetime.

Sherri update:  My blood pressure, with the help of medicine, has returned to normal.  I will remain on two fo the three medicines they had me on for a couple of months and be reevaluated then.  My general practitioner said it can take up to 8-12 weeks for post partum hypertension to resolve.  They did take me off of the lasix as it was not allowing milk production.  Still behind the eight ball on that, but he is still getting about 2/3 breast milk.  Other than that, I’m feeling well.  I have contracted the cough/cold that McKinley had but am on the mend.

Makayla update:  She is doing great.  We took 2 1/2 weeks off from school and she wasn’t necessarily ready to start back but we did.  She made 100% on her spelling test last week, is breezing through math–so far.  Last week she learned that starfish have two stomachs, learned a couple of Bible verses, worked on common and proper nouns, read a few short stories and reviewed ancient Chinese history.  She has also wrapped up soccer for the fall and had a GREAT time trick or treating last week.  She was Tinkerbell.

McKinley update:  Other than her cough, she is doing great.  She was a delight to watch while trick or treating last week.  She, literally, ran the entire hour we were out.  Saying, “Hurry up mom”.  She would stop at a house and after they gave her candy, she would yell, “Happy Halloooweeen!  Thank you!”  She is still going around saying, “Halloween, halloween, trick or treat.”  She was a fairy and we are for sure getting our money out of those fairy wings!

She has home health this Sunday and a clinic visit with IV Vincristine on Monday.  She will also start steroids on that Monday and have oral Methotrexate and her daily dose of Mercaptopurine as well.  Still amazed at all this child has and is going through.  She continues to amaze us and bring our house much joy!

Drew update:  He is doing well and eating quite a bit.  He is eating about every 3-4 hours and does not like having gas, but then who does.  We are wondering if he is sensitive to me consuming dairy products.  I am keeping an eye on it and hopefully that is the source for his uncomfortableness.  If he does not have gas, he is quite pleasant and sleeps well.  I love cuddling with him and am trying to enjoy the baby stage as much as possible.  McKinley still can not keep her hands off of him.  She has a stool by the pack n play so she can see him and end up pestering him…..oh the fun he is going to have being in this family!

Please continue to pray for our McKinley and her to continue to be free of cancer cells.

For her body to sleep and rest and recover from this cough/cold.

For Scott’s surgery to go smoothly.

Good general health and rest for all of us.

God is good and we are thankful for the JOY He has brought into our lives through our children.
